Scroggin!

Trail mix, GORP (good ol’ raisins and peanuts), scroggin (in NZ-speak), it’s all energy to go. While recently tramping in Tongariro National Park I made up a batch of one of my favourite mixes to keep my pocket company.

There are lots of schools of thought on what should be in the mix but my number one priority is that it should taste good and be full of the things you like. Secondly, I think there should be a quick energy element which is usually chocolate in my case, a medium energy, ie. dried fruit, and a slow burning energy/ protein for muscle building…nuts and seeds. The beauty is in the personalisation factor, and I just never got why they sell scroggin in the supermarket. How can one size fit all, I cry? Just for ideas-sake, here are a few of my favourites.

The #1 fave: dried apricots chopped, dark chocolate chips, salted peanuts

The #2 fave: dried cranberries, dark chocolate buttons, pumpkin seeds (pepitas), dessicated or shredded coconut, cashews, and raw almonds

The #3 fave: chopped dried mango, chopped brazil nuts, white or dark chocolate chips and sesame seeds

I like to use salted nuts or seeds as the salt combines with the sugar in the chocolate and/or fruit to help keep you hydrated as long as you are drinking enough water. Sports drinks need not apply. Plus it tastes good!

What’s your favourite mix?
